“Just Released” my new book, Belize..Is it your Final Destination!

Hello All,

I’m thrilled to announce the release of my first travel eBook, Belize..is it your Final Destination. I created this guide to Belize because I found not only myself, but others who just couldn’t find a guide like it. Using my own personal experience, I explained to the readers how to determine if Belize is even right for them, based on their likes and dislikes. This I firmly believe is where anyone needs to start their quest, looking for a foreign country, where life is more relaxed, your dollar goes farther, there’s ocean waterfront, or jungles, ruins, great fishing, lots of “Expat’s” or not.

I then fill you in on the different regions of Belize, and what they have to offer, or not. This guide will help you decide if you still want to visit Belize to check it out, as well as deciding which area’s to visit. When to go, what to bring, what to expect. You’ll learn what to pack, what you think you will need, but won’t.

You’ll also learn the advantages of staying in a resort, a condo or renting a home, how to get around the country, car, boat, plane, etc. I’ll help you understand the currency, languages, roads, best way to get around. Learn about the mainland, the islands, and most importantly, how to have fun in Belize. Thats why most of us look at Central America and especially Belize, beaches, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and of course Belize Rum.

I hope you take advantage of my eBook guide, available on Amazon.com, or just by clicking the link below. It’s a quick download, and can be read on any reader, Kindle, iPad,iPhone, etc.

And the best thing? It’s only $3.99 , less than a late at Starbucks.

Safe travels and hope to see you on the road.

Gary

Belize..Is It Your Final Destination

Greetings All,

I’m excited to announce the release of my new eBook,

My new book about moving to Belize, released 5/4/2015

My new book about moving to Belize, released 5/4/2015

Belize..Is It Your Final Destination, now available on all readers, including Kindle, iBooks, Barnes & Noble and many more. This is a informative book on making an informed decision on moving to Belize, not your usual guide book, talking about ruins, diving, where to eat, and resorts, instead about your upcoming visit. Where to visit in Belize, what to bring, about the different area’s, where to relocate, and above all, what to and how to research before going so you don’t spend time and money traveling to a region you don’t like.

There are many different regions where you can visit, and possibly relocate to for retirement, or just investment or vacations. Jungles, beaches, Islands, Inland, waterfront, Retirement Communities, condo’s and many more choices. I try to take the guesswork out, so you can decide and plan the perfect visit to Belize.

This book is based on my own personal experience of researching before I actually decided to visit Belize, and check out the various destinations within this beautiful country myself. My goal, to see if Belize was the right decision for my retirement destination.

In my case, I found an area and community that I fell in love with.

I hope you do too.

Hope you take the opportunity to read my book, and make an informed decision to visit this awesome country for yourself, and who knows, maybe become a neighbor. And the best part is, it’s not going to break the bank, because it’s only $3.99 😉

May all your trails be happy ones,

Gary

Belize Vacation in a Beachfront House Rental in Placencia

The first in my series of posts about my recent 3 weeks in Belize. If your thinking about a vacation destination, forget Costa Rica, Belize is closer, cheaper, and much more fun.

I just returned from three awesome weeks in the Central American country of Belize. Most people have heard of Belize, with all the exposure it’s been getting recently as a vacation or Expat destination. Average temperatures staying in the 80’s all year long, awesome beaches, fantastic scuba diving and fishing. And then there’s the food! Don’t get me started!

I’ve vacationed in Belize multiple times, and in fact have bought a building lot overlooking the Caribbean, with plans to build my final home and visions of retirement in this tropical paradise. This adventure begged for more discovery in the nearest village of Placencia, which is closest to my new home.

I really wanted to get to know what was there for services, groceries, supplies, restaurants and of course beach bars.

The home I rented was via VRBO, and as I have done so many times before, I researched every possibility on-line. I made my decision from photo’s and previous guests reviews. And, like my previous house rentals, I wasn’t disappointed. The house was described as open-floor design, one level, with all amenities, large wooden decks, and it’s own private beach directly on the Caribbean. And it was all that and more.

The rental house in Placencia

The rental house in Placencia

Another excellent feature was it’s location, at the end of the world famous walkway that stretches through town. Rumored to be the narrowest street in the world, this sidewalk is foot traffic only, and offered us access to everything in town, by sandals. Being able to walk to the store for beer, to restaurants, bars and shops and not having to rent a golf cart (the main mode of travel in Belize) was awesome.

And then there was the beautiful deck, privacy and two most excellent hammocks, begging each morning for my body with a cup of joe.

For a week and a half, I became so much more at home in Placencia, meeting new people, as well as getting together with contractor/ builders there in the search for that right professional to build my dream home. And the fun thing about this process which in the us is done in a sterile office? I did it in a beachfront bar having an ice cold cocktail ! Business is done in a casual fashion, over a beer or whatever, in shorts, sandals or no shoes at all. After all, the motto of Belize is “No shirt, No shoes, No problem man”.

Looks like dinner is ready

Looks like dinner is ready

Other super facts are that in Belize, everyone speaks english, they accept the U.S. dollar, and you get to eat fresh fruit and vegetables all year long. Also, fresh seafood all year long, with conch, lobster and shrimp being the main staples. And then there is stewed chicken and bakery goods, ok, I’m getting hungry for my Belizean food already! Time to plan another visit.

Placencia has the best beaches in Belize, Time to catch up on your tan ?

You can’t go wrong with a visit to this beautiful country, whether you rent a beachfront home, or stay in one of the excellent resorts on the mainland or Ambergris Caye. If you really want to relax, plan your stay, or part of it on Caye Caulker Island. But wait! Let’s hole off on those two destinations until my next blog or three in this series.

No Worries man,

Gary

Experience San Francisco’s Best French Bistro’s

Spending some time visiting San Francisco is a treat for anyone, with a city steeped in history, ethnic diversity, culture and more that is reflected in it’s restaurants. This isn’t the local town where you can run down to the local shopping center and grab a burger and fries at Macs, and you shouldn’t anyway. In this town, you have a choice of some of the finest restaurants in the world, and most offer fresh seafood from the sea, meats and poultry from organic farms and the like.

However, maybe you are on a fairly tight budget or maybe diet, or looking for a lunch or dinner choice with a different outlook, price and atmosphere? Today in many of our towns we are seeing the increase in the local “Bistro”, serving coffees, wines, fresh made soups and sandwiches and so much more. The atmosphere can be busy or peaceful, and usually filled with people hiding in their iPhones or Macs.

Just something special about relaxing for a coffee or glass of wine and café food in a great bits.

Just something special about relaxing for a coffee or glass of wine and café food in a great bits.

The thing is, you can have choices of sitting at bars, high stools at café tables, benches, and sometimes on a sofa or cushion. These cafes are relaxing as they should be, warm from the outside to the inside where you are always greeted, and you can feel the weight of the world come off your back. Sometimes you can find a good bistro right around the corner from that hotel of yours where you got the excellent rates.

Lets take a look at a few of the more popular French Bistro’s in Greater San Francisco hopefully give you some idea’s for your next visit.

L’ardoise Bistro is a delightfully warm environment located on Noe Street at the corner of Henry in downtown. They post their menu on a black chalkboard, which by the way is whet L’ardoise means in French. The owner Chef Clement was born in the French Alps and from early years in his fathers butcher shop, to perfecting his art in Paris, he opened the bistro in 2008.

Enjoying someones company (or not?) in a Bistro can be quite romantic.

Enjoying someones company (or not?) in a Bistro can be quite romantic.

The bistro offers you an excellent wine list to enjoy with your appetizers and or entrée, and the choices are just delightful. You can start with a bowl of fresh soup for $6, gourmet appetizers for under $12 and if you’re still hungry, how about Duck Leg Confit for $20? There’s more choices on the board, and you can surly enjoy your lunch or dinner for a great deal less than what you could run up elsewhere.

And nothing beats the atmosphere.

The next bistro we will look at is The Butler and the Chef Bistro located on South Park Street in San Francisco. Here’s a Bistro where I know you can satisfy you hunger without putting a hurt on your wallet. To begin with, they offer their Baguette Sandwiches with soup or salad for $15. Now these aren’t simple sandwiches, with choices like French Country pork paté, Duck rillettes, Wood smoked Salmon and French brie, taste buds will dance.

Fresh Organic Buckwheat Crêpes are under $18, with choices like Salmon, Prawns, ham and more and hot sandwiches offered at $14. Their breakfast menu will surly make you believe you are in Paris, and the pastry menu will confirm it. They also serve some outstanding Belgium beers, European wines by the glass or bottle, and if you want to get something from the menu for a picnic or back in your room, there’s take out too.

Isn't this "your sign"?

Isn’t this “your sign”?

Chez Maman-Potrero Bistro is the next on our list, offering choices in food that customers rave about. They are located on 18th Street neat the Missouri and Connecticut St. This is a small but truly a French restaurant, with nothing reminding you that you are in America. You may find a line and have a wait, maybe 10-15 minutes to get a seat, but it’s well worth the wait. The French Cuisine is nice and cozy, and perfect for a couple looking to enjoy their evening.

You can choose to sit at the bar or a table, while you study the menu over a glass of French wine. Fresh seafood is absolutely superb here, especially the garlic mussels. From the excellent French onion soup, to Fettuccini (I know, Italian in a French restaurant, but so very good), everything is warm, creamy and delicious.

As you scan the menu you’ll find that almost everything on it is $15 or less, with few exceptions. Even if you’re thinking of a burger, they have you’re back because they have one, and it comes with fries or salad for $11.

Finally lets look inside the South Park Café located at 108 South Park, downtown San Francisco. This café is one of those that if you were walking along the sidewalk and looked inside, chances are you would enter even for a glass of wine or cup of Joe. It’s warm, it’s pleasant looking and it looks like a bistro. As are most of the best California chefs Chef Ward Little did his time in France, ending up in the famous restaurant La Pyramide. The menu hangs on the wall here, and this food is on the same caliber, or better.

Many of our best chef's get their classical training in this town.

Many of our best chef’s get their classical training in this town.

There’s a limited lunch menu, served between 11:30 and 2:30, offering sups and sandwiches, from basic ham and cheese to Pork confit, for under $12. Soups and salads, and of course seafood, and nothing that will break the bank, and surly you would pay more at a fast food burger joint.

The dinner menu is the bomb! Appetizers including scallop pate and crab, “Pig Salad” (highly recommended”, saffron grilled sardines and more, all under $12.

You’ll be looking at Entrées under $30, including rack of lamb, homemade blood sausage, roast duck and other delicious competitors. For downtown San Francisco, eating this good, in a classically trained French Chef’s restaurant, could never happen at these prices, but it does.

Try the plate of linguini & fresh clams with a bottle of crisp Pinot Grigio, and see where the evening takes you?

Try the plate of linguini & fresh clams with a bottle of crisp Pinot Grigio, and see where the evening takes you?

These are only a few of the many Bistros’ in San Francisco, and we looked at the French Bistros. If one of these doesn’t get your attention, be sure to ask around, and you’ll surly get recommendations from locals. After all, it can and will save you in the process.

Gary’s Suggestions.

Take public transportations in San Francisco as much as possible, because driving is the pits!

Book your hotel as early as you can, and get your best rates on an excellent website

like http://www.cheaphotels.com. I do.

Spend an in-expensive day at Fisherman’s Warf, San Francisco

San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Warf has been a gathering place since the early days of the 19th century, when it was a hub of activity in the commercial fishing world. This is where the fishermen brought in their catch, unloaded, and gathered to “unwind”. Today it is one of the most visited areas of San Francisco, and for good reason, it’s restaurants, shops, attractions and awesome views can be appreciated all year long.

View of San Francisco bridge and the Warf

View of San Francisco bridge and the Warf

A though for your day: Choosing to spend a day at the Warf, as opposed to traveling to Napa/Sonoma Wine Country is probably saving you hundreds by not buying those cases of wine, at least today.

The main attraction of the Warf as far as seafood is concerned is the Dungeness crab which is you have never partaken, is almost a mandatory part of visiting San Francisco. Back in early days before this became a tourist area, the fishermen would cook the crab in massive steel pots and sell them to those walking about the streets. Today they are still served boiled, however you’ll have them on a plate, with silverware and napkin, or in most cases a bunch of napkins.

Visiting today, there are many excellent restaurants for enjoying the “fresh catch” of the day, as well as an iconic sourdough bread bowl of clam chowder, another specialty here. Later in the article we will give a few hints of what awaits you in the world of taste buds in San Francisco’s, Fisherman’s Warf.

Best time to visit for cheaper hotel rates? October through March, except holidays.

The Warf is where you can not only see the infamous Alcatraz Island in the bay, but also where you can catch the boat out to the island for a tour. If you are only visiting for a day, you might not want to do a tour however, if staying at one of the area hotels, another day’s activities should include an Alcatraz Tour.

These guys seem quite cute to visitors, but you wouldn't want them outside your bedroom window at night!

These guys seem quite cute to visitors, but you wouldn’t want them outside your bedroom window at night!

Strolling the Warf streets and visiting the many shops, although appearing to be tourist traps, actually can hold treasures, especially during a cool or rainy afternoon. Who doesn’t have a shirt or sweatshirt or two with a destination or attraction on it? Whether it’s a coffee mug or a hoodie with “I Spent Time On Alcatraz Island”, somewhere down the road it will surly bring a smile to your face. Also, among those little shops, you’ll find local artist crafts as well as boutique clothing stores and maybe something really special for someone at home.

Just imagine walking through a giant glass tube with this guy staring at ya!

Just imagine walking through a giant glass tube with this guy staring at ya!

If traveling with or without small children, the Pier 39 Aquarium of the Bay is a fun, exciting and informative experience, and a great place to visit. You will experience the underwater world of the waters in the bay, including otters, Giant Pacific octopuses, bat rays and sevengill sharks, during your stroll through clear glass tunnels. If you’ve never experienced this before, it’s quite a hair-raiser at times, so be sure your blood pressure is in check.

The Aquarium is divided into four “learning areas” where you can experience the diversity of the waters around San Francisco. Discover the Bay shows you the animals found around the area docks. Under the Bay is where you walk through two massive clear tunnels viewing over 200 species. Then there’s the Touch the Bay where you actually arrive in the “petting zoo” and actually get to touch sharks, rays and more. Finally it’s time of course for a visit with California’s Otter families in the River Otters: Watershed Ambassadors area. All in all, the aquarium is a great place to spend a few hours and well worth the time and entry fee.

As with many other tourist areas, there’s also a Fisherman’s Warf Wax Museum, where you and the kids can experience famous and infamous personalities from our nations history. Although it may not be such a big deal to parents, it can be quite fascinating to children.

Fun for all, a visit to Fisherman’s Warf isn’t complete without checking out the USS Pampanito, a real World War II submarine docked at Pier 45. Right nearby you can also visit and explore the largest U.S. collection of historical vessels by heading to the Hyde Street Pier, and don’t forget your camera. This area is ripe for a “selfie” or two.

There's nothing quite like cracking open one of these beauties and dipping fresh crab in a cup of steaming hot butter!

There’s nothing quite like cracking open one of these beauties and dipping fresh crab in a cup of steaming hot butter!

Now it’s time to talk about some of the best and most interesting places to eat on the Warf. We’re most certain that you have heard of Bubba Gump, and if you walk out to the end of Pier 39, you’ll find Bubba Gump Shrimp Company where you can relax with bowl of clam chowder or fresh seafood and enjoy the almost perfect view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

Money saving tip: If looking to save $$$ and stay on budget, look for Annie’s Hot Dogs & Pretzels cart.

Another great choice especially while keeping in the “cost saving” mode would be Lou’s Fish Shack on Jefferson Street. Eat inside or outside in a casual environment, with live music. This is a fine place to grab an appetizer and a beer and do some people watching, or just to get off your feet. Get a bowl of clam or crab bisque for under $10 or the signature bread bowl for under $12.

If you’ve been thrifty and want to experience some of the best food on the Warf, and willing to spend some extra cash, then lunch or dinner at Pompeii’s Grotto could be your place. If weather is behaving, there’s nothing quite like an outside along the sidewalk table for two. This restaurant opened back in 1946 and has been a “go to” restaurant ever since. Serving classic Italian, and fresh shellfish and fish, there’s something for everyone’s palate.

In case you didn't know, San Francisco is home to Ghirardelli Chocolates! Visit the factory for a tour, or grab some on the Warf.

In case you didn’t know, San Francisco is home to Ghirardelli Chocolates! Visit the factory for a tour, or grab some on the Warf.

Money savings at Pompeii’s: Think about getting an awesome plate of fresh fish tacos for under $10 and a $6 draft of Big Daddy for lunch.

Now these are just a few dining options for you to think about, with many choices from sit down restaurants to stands. All in all, most offer spectacular views of the bay, and fresh seafood to put a super memory on those taste buds of yours.

When I travel, and I travel like crazy! I check for the best possible rates for my destination

on http://www.cheaphotels.com. And you should too! Just saying 😉

Happy Trails,

Gary

Playing with your balls cheaply in San Diego

If you are lucky enough to visit San Diego, California, no matter what time of year, you are almost guaranteed an awesome experience. With almost perfect weather all year long, it’s no wonder that outdoor sports are so popular here. Greater San Diego and in fact most of Southern California is well known for one thing, its beautiful and challenging golf courses. If you’ve never played before, this is the place to learn, if you are a seasoned player, you know you’ll be dragging your clubs to the check-in counter of your airlines.

Because San Diego is a major destination not only for tourists, but also business meetings, it’s always a good idea to make hotels reservations as soon as you know your dates.

Now that's a budget hotel!

Now that’s a budget hotel! That being said, along with a major high cost of living, as they say in Southern Oregon, “you pay for the weather”, and that’s true in San Diego County for sure. Many of the courses will charge you upwards to $300 just for the opportunity to play their course. Even the Municipal courses like Torrey Pines and deplete your wallet if you don’t know how and when to grab a cheap t-time.

And that’s what we are going to explore in this article, where, when and how to play sunny San Diego’s great golf course, for cheap.

One of my personal favorites is located on Coronado Island, and although not as challenging as many, the greens and fairways are always excellent, and you’re playing on the San Diego Bay, which is beautiful. Let me ask you, how many of you readers have ever played a round and had to interrupt your game because a U.S. Navy battleship was gong by so close you could see the sailors on deck?

Golfing in warm ocean breezes is so very refreshing

Golfing in warm ocean breezes is so very refreshing

Although this is a busy course for obvious reasons, it’s not unreasonable to ask for a t-time, and get it. Not really a course for the new golfer because they really enforce that you move along, with foursomes in front and behind you, going off every 10-15 minutes. The course is a Par-72, plays at 6,900 or so yards, and is a delight to play.

I’m sure you are asking yourself what the “damages” are for all this greatness? If you play on a weekend it will cost you $35 a head, and on weekdays $30. This is almost unheard of in San Diego County, which is why it gets so much attention, as you can imagine. Not a course you just walk on to, so try to make advanced reservations.

Maybe it's time for the wife to catch up on her tan while you chase your balls?

Maybe it’s time for the wife to catch up on her tan while you chase your balls?

Helpful hint: If your spouse and possibly kids are looking for something to keep occupied while your hitting the links, bring them with you to Coronado Island. The quaint little downtown is delightful, with shops, coffee houses and restaurants. They can spend hours along just exploring the famous Hotel Del Coronado, famous in the movies, and for being the largest wooden building in the U.S. There’s also bike rentals as well as quiet sandy beaches.

The Hotel del Coronado is a historic hotel, waterfront, with movie star history and ghosts. It's also a great place to wander, shop, or sit on the outside deck and enjoy a glass of wine and maybe some lunch.

The Hotel del Coronado is a historic hotel, waterfront, with movie star history and ghosts. It’s also a great place to wander, shop, or sit on the outside deck and enjoy a glass of wine and maybe some lunch.

Let’s take a look at an “inland” San Diego area golf course that offers great golf, beautiful views of vineyards, lakes and wildlife, and much more reasonable rates.

The Vineyard Golf Course in Escondido, just 30 minutes drive time from downtown San Diego is well worth the drive, especially if you want to escape the summer heat in town.

The course is easy to get to, just 5 minutes off of I-15 that runs out to Temecula and the great beyond. This public golf course offers you an exciting 18 holes, in a pleasant atmosphere, without the pressure found in most San Diego courses. Designed by David Rainville this is a challenging course, so you must bring you’re a-game. You can play this course for $39 for 18 holes weekdays and $45 weekends if you make an advanced t-time, and with that you get a cart. That’s a 13% discount on price, well worth the phone call or going on-line.

You can get some good advice from residents

You can get some good advice from residents

Couples Fun hint: Why not surprise your spouse or girl friend and ask them to tag along as a non-golfer and experience the rolling hills, beautiful lakes, wildlife, as well as the “19th hole”?

Finally lets look at another favorite, one, which you’ve probably seen on TV, Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course. This course played along the crashing waves of the spectacular ocean scene below will take your breath away. Whether you have an opportunity to play the North or South Course, you won’t be disappointed. Now, that being said, the green fees are quite a bit higher than some other courses, but the fact is, the course is always in great shape, and then there’s the views.

Again with Torrey Pines, it’s a stretch to think you can drive up, park; grab your bags and just walk on the course. It’s always busy, so the best bet is to make a t-time in advance. It’s also the way you can save some money, because you can get a booking fee of around $45 for the South course by advanced booking. Consider the fact that you can pay up to $229 for 18 holes on the South Course as a non-resident.

There are some ways to play this course and save big money, but you have to do it during “off hours”. You can play 18 holes of “Twilight” golf for $60-75 depending on which course, play the North’s back 9 for $60, or become a San Diego Resident, and play for less than half the non-resident fees.

Making your San Diego experience everything and more than expected, and not having to mortgage the home to do it, is key. Therefore, finding the best deal on your hotel choice, in the best location is key. I highly suggest taking a look at what http://www.cheaphotels.com can do for you.

Bon Voyage my friends.

Best Happy Hour’s in DownTown NYC

If you’ve never been to New York City, or even if you have, being there is always an experience you will keep forever. There’s a reason Frank Sinatra sang about it being the “City that doesn’t sleep”, because it really doesn’t. There are plenty of things to see and do in the city, but certainly one of the most famous and popular a stroll down the streets of Time Square. Who hasn’t watched as millions of party people bring in the New Year, watching the big ball drop there, while freezing their butts off!

Nothing quite says NYC like a stroll down Times Square at night

Nothing quite says NYC like a stroll down Times Square at night

Busy is what you will be all day in the city, but when it comes to the evening, maybe your looking for some nightlife and action, as well as some eats, while still keeping to a budget. Keeping that in mind, as food isn’t cheap in New York City, unless you plan to live on slice pizza, we have an idea you might enjoy.

Happy Hour!

You’ve found an excellent deal on a hotel downtown New York City, and will either be using your feet or a cab to get around, so why not have some fun and let the cabbie be your “designated driver”? Happy hours are not only fun, but also can provide you at least a couple hours of cheap drinks and cheap eats. In fact, if you play your cards right, and hit the right happy hours; those discount appetizers can easily become dinner.

So lets head out on the town, and mingle with the locals where they gather at some of NYC’s finest happy hours.

Beer Pubs and their Pub Menu's offer that casual feeling where you can relax, even with the noisy surroundings. Happy Hour prices aren't a bad thing either!

The Landmark Tavern on Eleventh Avenue is a very popular place to start, taking you into the world of the British “gastropub”. It first opened its doors in 1868, and while you are sipping and munching, check out the tin ceilings, tiled floors, mahogany paneling and of course the massive bar. If you are a scotch sipper/connoisseur, or want to be, this is the place you want to hit. Sitting at the bar you will become mesmerized by the seventy plus bottles of only the finest scotches of the world on the shelves. Happy Hour runs from 4-7PM Monday through Friday and the Landmark offers buy-one-get-one-free drinks, and $0.10 each Buffalo wings. How many wings can you eat before saying “Uncle”?

Money Saving Tip: As this is an article about “happy hour”, it’s for adults only. My frequent mention of subway connections and taking Cabs is to prevent loss of funds with a DUI.

Another fantastic Happy Hour is at the 123 Burger Shot Beer located in Hell’s Kitchen on 10th Ave. You can hop a cab or take the subway to the 50th Street Station at Eighth Ave, close by. The super thing about Burger Shot is Monday through Friday from 11 am – 8pm is happy hour. Not only do they offer reduced drink prices, but also food specials, like wings and fries for $6.95, or double wings, $5 Margaritas. Bring some friends and on Tuesdays get two orders of any fries, ten sliders and a 100oz Beer Tube for $42. Every day lunch specials like three burgers with fries and a tankard of beer for $7 or just $1 burgers.

This Bar/Restaurant is just a party happening and instead of some big fancy restaurant where you can run up 100’s of dollars on dinner, here you have a good time, great food and drinks, and more for less.

Call yourself lucky is they offer fresh oysters at happy hour prices. A glass of wine, plate of oysters, a red rose, could spell "lucky" later this evening?

Maybe a more relaxed venue is in the cards after your busy day, and quite possibly a glass or two of fine wine with snacks. If that’s your cup of tea, then head to Amuse Wine Bar on Ludlow Street. The subway can take you close if you get off at Delancey and Essex Street, or take a cab, as it’s located on New Yorks Lower East Side.

From 3PM-7PM they offer a wine flight of your pick of wines for $15 including a Cheese and Charcuterie Sampler Plate or beer flight for $8 with choice of appetizers. The atmosphere at the wine bar is warm with an almost Tuscan feel as you surrey up to the wooden bar and relax on a swiveling bar seat.

The Barrel located in East Village on Stuyvesant Street (try repeating that 5 times) offers an exciting happy hour from 3PM – 7PM, M-F, with $3 Draft Beers and $4 Well Drinks. Their fresh homemade Sangria, which is a house specialty, is $5 each and a glass of premium wine is $5. Oh what a deal! Each happy hour features specials on Tapas at $5 each or $12 for choice of 3, with Tuna Slicers, Shrimp Scampi, Hanger Steak and more. You will definitely fill up here for a lot less than a dinner locally for just one.

Be especially careful of so called "un-advertised specials"?

If you are planning to attend one of the shows in the Theater District, you might want to check out this place before the show. Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar, located on 46th Street is a fantastic place to say you’ve been to, and you might get a “selfie” with a “star” too. From 4-8PM every evening they offer specialty drinks and appetizers at a reduced price, and it’s a good deal. For thirty years or more this iconic nightclub/restaurant located on “Restaurant Row” has entertained countless celebrities, including Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler and more. Happy hour in the Piano Bar is lots of fun, with an abundance of seating at tables or the mega long bar.

Is that Jon Bon Jovi at the bar? Can you see him behind me yet?

You just never know who might walk in because Don’t Tell Mama’s has been the Launchpad for many of yesterday and todays most rich and especially famous performers. Have that Smartphone ready at a minutes notice for that all telling “selfie”!

My Guide to Orlando’s Best & Cheapest Happy Hour’s

A Guide to Orlando’s Best & Cheapest Happy Hour’s

So there you are in sunny vacationland with the children, living the American Dream of the family vacation. You’ve worked all year and saved up enough money for the trip, found an excellent deal on your hotel, and you are now living that dream in the heart of “Kids Town Orlando”. Has it occurred to you that there just might be some time that you can get away for an hour or two and relax with other “like minded” and exhausted adults?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Happy Hour! That’s the ticket.

We’re going to suggest some of the best places in this children’s vacationland where you can have a cocktail, or a beer, or two, along with some terrific appetizers, and pay happy hour discounted prices. After all, we don’t want to feel guilty about spending tons of money that could be spent on Mickey Mouse Hats and the Alligator Park, do we?

Let’s start with Wines Grille & Wine Bar that was recently voted “Best Happy Hour in Orlando” by the Orlando style magazine. What could be better than relaxing with a super glass of wine or cocktail after your hectic day? At vines, they offer half price on over 36 different excellent wines by the glass as well as half price on their bar food menu. Happy Hour here at Vines is from 4 PM to 7PM, and the wine list features wines from California, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and more. Not a wine sipper you say, have you ever had a “Dirty Caesar”? Want one? They have a full bar and special Martinis.

Surprisingly how filling and tasty fresh oysters can be.

The “snack” menu at the bar isn’t so bad either, with items like Mussels in saffron tomato broth, Parmesan Truffle Fries, Spicy Lamb Meatballs, Fresh Oysters and more. With the half price menu you can certainly eat a fantastic dinner on happy hour prices, and get the relaxation you deserve.

Our next stop is a perfect “getaway” on a tropical Bahama Island. Well, not exactly. Actually it’s the Bahama Breeze Island Grille on Vineland Ave. Although the happy hour is only from 4PM until 6PM that’s still enough time to take advantage of the great drink and food menu. An added fun part of happy hour at the Bahama Island is that there’s live music from 4:30 PM until 7PM. Its usually tropical but what else would you expect?

There's a reason you can almost always find wings on a bar menu, because they go great with beer!

They have half price drink and appetizer specials each night, with $2 draft beers and $3 bottle beers. All wines are offered at $2 off per glass as well as premium brand cocktails at $3 each. Just think of the smile on your face as you exit the theme park knowing that in a bit you will be relaxing and sipping on a Mojito Cubano or Pineapple Coconut Martini.

For a look at those half-price appetizers, think how quickly you can get filled up with a plate of Habanero Chicken Wings or Firecracker Shrimp Street Tacos. Maybe you want to try their Skillet Simmered Jerk Shrimp or Lobster & Shrimp Quesadilla? Do we have your attention yet?

Looking pretty yummy, but are begging for a top shelf Margarita !

So is a couple hours spent relaxing at happy hour among adults sounding appealing?

If a more “upscale and warm ambience type of setting is in the picture for your happy hour, them the Courtesy Bar on N. Orange Ave downtown might just be the place for you. Happy Hour is from 5PM until 8PM and offers some good eats at happy hour prices, as well as your choice of $4 beer, wine, well drinks or their signature-handcrafted punch. The bar itself is set in a 1920’s style with low lighting and an old style stamped tin ceiling offering more personal with a secluded feel.

The specialty cocktail to experience here is the Sailor Mule, a concoction of ginger beer, lime and spiced rum.

Next on our list would be Hooch in the Wall Street Plaza, considered by many to be the best outdoor bar in Orlando. Happy Hour Monday – Friday is from 4PM to 7PM and features their namesake, Batched Moonshine! That’s right, hooch made with flavors including lemonade and Mom’s Apple Pie. There’s always a new flavor hooch so ask when you get here. Happy hour Moonshines are only $3, or draft / bottle beer for same price.

Could this be the "Moonshine Shack" in the mountains, creating "hooch"?

They offer a yummy menu of food during Happy Hour, all $5. There’s Seared Ahi Tuna, BBQ Chicken Sliders, Chicken Fingers, Pork Sandwich and House Made Hummus or Fried Tofu if you must. If you fill up on the happy hour food and want to stay after that, every night offers special prices to keep you happy, as well as live music on Friday night.

Lastly a truly fun time can be had at Orlando’s Waitiki Bar & Restaurant an outdoors Tiki Bar located on Wall Street. You get to munch out on BBQ Sliders, Chicken Fingers w/ Thai Chili Sauce, Seared Ahi Tuna, or Pork Sandwiches for $5 each. Sip on one or more Bacardi & 3 Olive Cocktails like their Acapulco Breeze or Mango Sour for $4. For our beer drinking readers, Red Stripe or Red Stripe Light for $2.50 is oh what a deal.

You have to admit this would taste pretty awesome after a day in a "theme park"

These are just a few of the place for your “get away” happy hour, and should give you an idea of what’s available to you. Most of them will get you out of the larger vacation crowds, like the Courtesy Bar, but no matter, they all offer you two things you probably need, cheap drinks and cheap food, so enjoy.

One last thought, “My children are to young to leave alone”. Problem solved. There are tons of baby sitters advertised in Orlando, and many recommended by the hotels themselves. Another option is to use a very popular organization, “Kids Night Out” that offers a service at hotels where they will watch your children and or pets. They actually will bring “age appropriate” entertainment to keep your kids entertained. Guaranteed piece of mind while you go out and play.

Visit the 5 Top Places in San Antonio

The Top Five “Free” places to visit in San Antonio, Texas

Hey! Who's that guy in the coonskin hat?

Hey! Who’s that guy in the coonskin hat?

San Antonio Texas is considered by many to be the ultimate vacation destination in the great state of Texas. San Antonio has that special old Southwest charm about it with entertainment options galore. Some well-known attractions destinations and parts of history like the Alamo, Riverwalk and Sea world can keep visitors very occupied, and many wishing they had more time. From the mariachis singing and strumming as they glide from place to place along the river walk, to the many festivals, which seem to run all year long your entertainment is guaranteed.

What we hope to do in this article is give you some ideas of the fantastic things to do in the town of San Antonio Texas that won’t cost you a dime. Once you choose your destination hotel, and if possible book it for a time when the rates are at their lowest, you can head out on your own for a well-deserved and low-cost vacation.

Money Saving Tip: You can save a bundle of cash getting sandwiches to go and having picnics.

Let’s start by taking a look at things you can do during the day because there’s no shortage of things to do in the evening, but more about that later. The first thing to do for free is a visit to the San Antonio Mission’s National Historic Park. Everyone knows or will learn on visiting San Antonio that this town has a very deep and long history, especially Spanish history. When you visit this historical Park you will be exploring centuries of its culture and history. There is no admission fee at any of the missions however there are donation stations which helped maintain these historic sites.

These five old and beautiful stone missions are the mission San Antonio day Valero which you’ll find is actually the well-known Alamo. Then there’s the mission concept she on, the Mission San Jose, the mission San Juan Capistrano and lastly the Mission San Francisco de la Espada. This is of course a driving tour because this San Antonio Mission Trail stretches along 9 miles of the San Antonio River and begins at historical site called the Alamo.

Because the Alamo is probably the most well known site and most visited site in San Antonio, and the fact that you might not even know much about the history we like to fill in a few things for you. Over 2 1/2 million people walk around the grounds and inside the Alamosa 4.2 acre complex. You can almost hear the event that occurred on April 21, 1836 when the heroic and courageous defenders of the Alamo fell to the Mexican army. Immortalized in time are some of the more famous names of those defenders, William B Travis, James Bowie, and of course David Crockett in his coon skin hat.

This is a great opportunity for you to pack a picnic lunch, and find a good place for the picnic at one of the missions. It will also save you some money by not eating in a restaurant.

Another exciting adventure is a visit to Fort Sam Houston Museum in San Antonio. The museum itself is located on the actual US Army post, which was built in 1845, and houses over 900 the stork structures including the Pershing house, the Eisenhower house, as well as the quadrangle. If you follow the history of the United States or have ever heard all the famous Indian chief Geronimo, the quadrangle is the structure that housed chief Geronimo during his incarceration.

Another fun place to visit and also get a little exercise and I’m possibly some great shopping is the King William Historic District. Located downtown San Antonio and covering 25 blocks this historic and distinguished part of town is located on the south bank of the San Antonio River. Most us of these historic buildings are from the 19th century and many have been turned into museums, cafés, art galleries and other shops. Back in the early 1800s this area was known as a part of town where the upper crust resided, mainly the wealthy German merchants.

For those vacationers traveling with Fido we have an excellent place for you to visit and spend a few hours with the family dog. The Phil Hardberger Park and dog park is located on the north side of San Antonio but still in the heart of the city this 300-acre plus park was once a large dairy farm and is now an urban ecology Center. Throughout the park you find restored native landscape as well as many century-old trees stabilized to retain their beauty. This is another place you can spend hours in fact prolong a picnic lunch because there are picnic tables throughout the park as well as water troughs for both large and small dogs and an 8 acre enclosed dog park.

Dine on the river

Lastly let’s talk about one of the main attractions in San Antonio and that would be River Walk also known as Paseo Del Rio. The Riverwalk area along the San Antonio River is an excellent place to visit both day and night. The Riverwalk itself is located approximately 20 feet below the main street level up above with easy walking access from the Elmo. Just strolling along the river walk and watching the Riverboats motoring up and down the river, including River tour boats that you too can enjoy, makes for a fun time. During the day it’s an excellent place to stroll the many shops and maybe grab a bite to eat for lunch in one of the outdoor tables and cafés along the river. There’s nothing like being serenaded by mariachi bands and eating a delicious fish taco.

The River walk itself extends up to 13 miles and along the way there are many 18th-century Spanish buildings and museums that you can visit. But at night, downtown San Diego comes alive with music, entertainment and diners finding that one place that fits their needs as well as their budget. You can always find happy hour prices and save some money and just enjoy people watching on the river.
