San Francisco Attractions you shouldn’t miss! And they’re FREE !

A view of Alcatraz Prison

A view of Alcatraz Prison

It doesn’t matter if you’ve visited San Francisco before or never have, some attractions don’t always make the “top 10” list, but should. It’s so easy to concentrate on the famous destinations, like Alcatraz Island or Pier 39 for a bowl of clam chowder and a glass of wine. But what about the sites lower down the list that are excellent places to visit, and best of all, free?

After all, you’ve done your homework already and secured a great rate on your hotel, so why not continue and visit some of San Francisco’s best “on the cheap”? At the same time, you can enjoy some peace and quiet, exercise on some, and no crowds? You also can get some great photo’s on that new camera or “smart phone” to show friends and family back home.

Whether you have seen them in a movie, travel show or the old “Rice-A-Roni” commercials, the cable car has a place in history, especially here in San Francisco. When visiting the World Famous Fisherman’s Warf in San Francisco, you need to catch a historic ride on the F-Line cable car that runs from there through the Embarcadero and up Market Street to the top of the Castro District.

The Rice-a Roni Express

The Rice-a Roni Express

Photo Hint: Take a “selfie” on the cable car for friends, family and the world!

Staying on the “cable car” theme, another often overlooked attraction, and definitely one for families is the Cable Car Museum, which is located in the historic district of downtown San Francisco. This museum is located in the Washington-Mason Powerhouse up on Nob Hill. You can spend some time roaming about the massive wheels and engines that hauled the cable cars up San Francisco hills many moons ago. Take a photo or two in front of the three 1880’s cable cars on view as your thoughts wander to days gone by.

Pack yourself a picnic lunch, complete with perhaps a bottle of California’s wine and head off to stroll the Presidio, the old military post, now a National Park. This beautiful park is a splendid place to spend some time appreciating the architectural treasures throughout the park as well as its beautiful trails. However, you can enhance your visit and picnic site by heading to Crissy Field in the northern section of the park along the water. Here you can spread a blanket or use one of the picnic tables and barbeque set-ups while enjoying views of the bay and San Francisco Bridge.

While there: See if there’s a walking tour while you’re there, they are free.

Another outstanding adventure is located on the waterfront at Pier 15, in the Embarcadero. This attraction is so much fun for adults as well as families traveling with small children. This is a “hands on” museum, housing some 600 hands-on curious exhibits will entertain you for hours. Besides the exhibits another reason to visit is the magnificent glass and steel “Bay Observatory” offering some of the best views of San Francisco and the bay.

"Caution"! 5 mph!

“Caution”! 5 mph!

A visit to Lombard Street, considered to many to be the “crookedest street” in San Francisco, and possibly the world is just a “kick”. You have two choices when visiting this famous street, driving or walking, each quite the experience in their own way. The draw over the years to this street is of course the eight zigzag turns that cover one block of San Francisco hills. Driving this road down a “bobsled type drop” at or below the posted 5 mph (8 km/h) is an experience only for the brave and any passenger that enjoys screaming on roller coasters.

A much better way to visit in a relaxed fashion and gain the advantage of exercise before that big meal is taking the Powel-Hyde Cable Car. This will pick you up in Union Square or Ghirardelli Square and let you off the car at the top of Lombard Street. If you are in the best of shape or want to be, the walk up the street can be quite an adventure in itself as well as a gourmet adventure. You might decide to take those much-needed breaks along the way for an Irish coffee at the Buena Vista Café or a chocolate at Ghirardelli Chocolates.

Photo hint: For your “trophy photo” take it looking up the street at Leavenworth Street.

Not the "Painted Ladies" you were expecting?

Not the “Painted Ladies” you were expecting?

Finally lets take a look at visiting some of the most famous example of early American architecture in San Francisco, and one to brighten your day. The Painted Ladies of San Francisco sounds like a visit to a “red light district”, but in fact are seven Victorian-style homes built between 1892 and 1896. These incredible homes are located on Steiner Street, and are survivors of this style of homes destroyed by the great San Francisco Earthquake in 1906. Bring your camera and capture the splendor of designs found in these homes that look exactly as they did back in the day.

More $$$ for gambling? Eat Cheap in Laughlin!

Hitting it big inn Laughlin!

Hitting it big inn Laughlin!

Vacationing in any of the top vacation destinations depletes the wallet size quickly and efficiently, that’s their business and livelihood. If you’re heading to Laughlin, it’s probably to play some table games and or slots and the last thing you want is to spend all your vacation money in fancy expensive meals. What we hope to accomplish in this article is to show you some of the top choices of “good eats” at a nice friendly and cheap price.

Hot Tip: Fall and winter offers the best rates for visitors.

Fill up at the buffet and it can last you for hours, for cheap!

Fill up at the buffet and it can last you for hours, for cheap!

Our first “cheap eats” visit is to the ever popular casino, the Tropicana” and it’s excellent Roundhouse Buffet. Now as most of us know, there are so so buffets and then there are great buffets. However everyone will agree, if you find a really good one, it’s a blast because it’s all you can eat! The Roadhouse is one of the good guys, featuring probably the best salad bar in town. It features Asian, American, Mexican and Italian foods.

Save more money in Laughlin, NV.  www.cheaphotels.com

They have special buffets on different days, from the “All you can eat” Crab & Prime Rib Friday & Saturdays at a whopping discount price of $18.99. Try getting on plate of either of these for anywhere near that! Every day they run the breakfast buffet, again all you can eat for under $9 per person. Sunday thru Thursday the regular buffet, which is by no means “regular” is $10.99.

Every Saturday, Sunday and on holidays you should definitely jump in line for the Champagne Brunch. Bubble your way up to the bottomless gourmet buffet to build up your stamina for a day out on the town

What's better than a Champagne Brunch with your fine lady?

What’s better than a Champagne Brunch with your fine lady?

Wednesday of the month, and you are veterans, you will eat for free in the buffet. Just be sure to have proof of service to get your “veterans card” at the Club Desk.

Waiting in line for their free buffet!

Waiting in line for their free buffet!

Let’s take a look at a local favorite, Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop in the Edgewater Casino for a cheap lunch or dinner. Most visitors will opt for a burger at Mac’s or some other “fast food” but after a while that can get old! In fact, the way prices have inched up over the years; it’s not really a bargain after all. This sandwich shop serves quality meats and cheese, not the “mystery meat” you can get elsewhere. If eager for “the Bomb”, you should try their Cheese Steak Sandwich”, which you’ll find the best in show in this gambling town.Be ready for some long lines, but as we all realize, long lines usually means great food inside.

Sink you teeth into this baby, morning, noon or night!

Sink you teeth into this baby, morning, noon or night!

Cheap thrills in Laughlin: Take a free train ride throughout the Tropicana Express Hotel/Casino in a reproduction steam train. Did we say it was free? Yep!

If you decide to take a break from the casinos and see some of the town and maybe do some shopping have we got the place for you? How would you like some shopping time and the chance to sample the best slice of pizza in Laughlin? How would you like that slice or whole pie to be the best price in town?

Mia’s Pizza at the Outlet Mall in the Food Court will be you noon or evening destination, and put a smile on your wallet and on your face. The thin slices or whole pie comes on paper, because this is a “no fancy frills” king of place. After all, you’re here for the pizza, not the music and photo’s of Rome on the walls. You can get a single slice for around $2, a 12 inch for $7.99 or 16 inch for $13.99. Traveling with kids? BAM! You just scored.

When you see this sign, time for a hard brake and a fast & cheap meal!

When you see this sign, time for a hard brake and a fast & cheap meal!

If you are not from the east coast, or visiting from another country, if there’s one “burger joint” that stands out above all others in the U.S., it’s “In and Out Burger”. If you have eaten there before, you know what we mean when we say “now that’s a burger”! This is like stepping back in time to the 50’s, the Rockettes, Buddy Holly and Elvis. The menu is quite simple, burgers, fries, onion rings, shakes and soda pop, that’s it. But, there’s just something about the burgers that makes them taste so very good.

Drive through or wait in line, it’s all worth it for this burger. And if you are trying to keep the waistline down, try their double-double cheeseburger without a bun, just wrapped in lettuce. Whether it’s the two of you or six it’s still cheaper than any restaurant on casino row.

Now let’s address the adults visiting Laughlin and where to save some money on food and drinks. Everyone should know that “happy hour” prices beat restaurant and bar prices every way possible. One of the favorite local hang out’s for after work happy hour is Buffalo Wild Wings. This is a Sports Bar with multiple large screen-TV, has an excellent beer menu, and awesome wings. During Happy Hour they offer discounted drinks and half price appetizers. Of course if traveling with children, they are welcome in the restaurant, and no matter what, this is still cheaper than dining in a casino restaurant.

Finally let’s take a look at a great “cheap dining opportunity” on the river at the Cove Bar and Lounge, located at the Aquarius Resort Casino. This outside lounge is overlooking the River Walk and river offers appetizers from 4-9 PM, as well as drink deals. In fact if you are a frequent flyer at the casino and have a green or red “Ace Card” you can get two free cocktails and a free appetizer. Another plus is this outdoor lounge is completely smoke free.

Atlantic City Vacation on a Dime! Well, a dime back in the 20’s that is!

Experience the past and present “Boardwalk Empire” in Atlantic City, and walk away with cash still in your wallet!

atlantic1

Whether you have followed the hit HBO Show “Boardwalk Empire” or not, everyone has certainly heard of Atlantic City and it’s famous past. Some things have changed, while others have stayed the same. The hotels and casino’s are new; the boardwalk has been renewed, and it can be an expensive vacation or not, but the water and sand are still the same.

Do I get to meet :The Donald"??

Do I get to meet :The Donald”??

We are going to take a peak at this “gambling capitol” of the East Coast, vacationland for young and old, rich, famous and just ordinary folks looking for some fun. However, we are going to talk about how to have fun and not deplete your bank account while doing it.

The Famous Atlantic City Boardwalk

The Famous Atlantic City Boardwalk

If you’re coming to Atlantic City for the gambling experience there are plenty of options for you on where to stay while here. Of course there are no shortages of high-class famous hotels on the Boardwalk, but you’ll pay for staying there. You might want to spend a little time shopping around for location and price with a great provider of hotels offering budget prices. Maybe staying somewhere close by in town, not on the Boardwalk, but close by is a better choice for multiple reasons.

Interesting fact: In 1921 the very first Miss America Competition was held in Atlantic City.

If your searching for hotels just off the boardwalk, you might want to search the Margate or Ventnor areas close by for your hotel. It’s almost a guarantee that you’ll find better room rates there, and it’s still a short drive of taxi to the boardwalk and casinos.

As far as what time of year is best to visit Atlantic City, fall is when rates will fall at the hotels along with the temperatures. If indoor sports and attractions is the name of your game, this time is best. You can plan on saving some bucks on rooms during winter months also, and other than the holidays, crowds will be gone with the sun too.

If you can make it happen, being here during the week and not weekends will offer you better access to restaurants, shows and gaming tables. Remember, for East Coasters especially from New York, this is an easy weekend destination.

Spend the day on the beach, riding the Ferris wheel, and maybe a hot dog for lunch?

Casino Hot Tip!

Casinos in Atlantic City are just as aware as they are in Las Vegas, to the fact that the more you consume alcohol, the more you are likely to spend gambling. That being said, when actively gambling is when you want to grab a cocktail waitress and order a drink, because it’s free. Just don’t forget her tip!

Dining in Atlantic City can be a challenge to your wallet, so here are a few tips on where to eat, eats well, and save some money.

There are plenty of buffet’s to choose from, but if you want the best at a good cost to you, check out the buffet at the bigger more exclusive hotel/casinos like Trump Taj Mahal or Caesars Palace. You think we are talking big bucks here? That’s a matter of opinion, and depends on price and what quality food you are willing to eat. These hotels serve high quality food on their buffet table, usually overseen by their Executive Chef.

There’s no shortage of food on the boardwalk, and not only is it good, its cheap too!

Hot Dogs, Cotton Candy and of course, slice pizza!

Hot Dogs, Cotton Candy and of course, slice pizza!

If you don’t want the buffet line, and want to avoid the high dollar casino restaurants there is another excellent choice for a meal or two, Pizza! There are many small pizza stands on the boardwalk, and though not as eye appealing as Roberts Steakhouse in Trump Taj Mahal, the pizza is excellent! Remember, those who frequent Atlantic City come from New York and Philadelphia, two towns that know pizza.

Money Savings Tip.

For traveling up and down the Atlantic City Boardwalk, there are trams available to you. Keep in mind that they are slow with frequent stops. An inexpensive alternative is the bus service that runs up and down Atlantic Avenue.

If you’re looking to see other attractions in Atlantic City that don’t require lots of cash and a table, there are some. Who doesn’t appreciate a good old historic lighthouse? Absecon Lighthouse is New Jersey’s oldest lighthouse, constructed back in 1855. You get to climb its 228 steps to the top for a very small fee, and it offers a nice view of Atlantic City.

You might also want to experience some of what the old days were like in 1920’s Atlantic City. Although the Ritz Carlton Hotel where the real Nucky Thompson from the Boardwalk Empire Series lived on it’s top floor is a now condo’s, you might want to check out the lobby. You can actually see the custom wood grand staircase that leads up to the original elevators surrounded by custom wood panel walls. It’s quite impressive, illuminates the mind, brings you back in time, and its free.

The Best Cotton Candy Anywhere!

The Best Cotton Candy Anywhere!

A visit to the Knife & Fork Inn located on the boardwalk, established back in 1912, has been renovated and restored to its old splendor. They advertise, “Nucky ate here, shouldn’t you”? Actually that’s a fact, the original sheriff, Nucky Thompson did eat there, and you might want to also. During Prohibition years, Nucky and his buddies Mayor Riddle and Commodore Keuhnle not only ate but also sipped their illegal “bootleg whiskey” here. It’s a nice place to experience some history, and maybe a burger and beer, and a lot cheaper than many places on the boardwalk.

Interesting fact: Lucy the Elephant is older than the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.

A visit to Lucy the Elephant, the six-story historical landmark was constructed back in the late 1880’s is interesting and a sweet photo op. Believed to have been used to hang different color lights to warn smugglers if ok to bring in the booze or hang until the law was gone. And as you are right there, you might as well step next door to the oldest business on the boardwalk, James’ Salt Water Taffy established in 1880. This was also featured in the HBO series, and you can take a factory tour as well as a box of very first ever Atlantic City Boardwalk souvenir.

Your After Dark “Bucket List” for visiting Chicago on a “shoestring budget”

An After Dark Bucket List for Chicago on a “shoestring budget

Blogwallet

Let’s face it, vacationing in big cities is a challenge, and we are always trying to find ways to “stretch” the old wallet, aren’t we?

That being said, this shouldn’t keep us from doing just that! What I mean is, we need to take vacations and visit new places, and still be able to keep spending in check.
This article is my attempt to show you how to accomplish just that, in the “Windy City”, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.

There’s plenty to do in Chicago during the day when this city is alive with people, from parks, museums, waterfront activities and much more. However, it’s after hours that this old city really comes alive. Remember, this is where the old time mobsters ran backroom joints or “speakeasies” that packed at night to the music and cheap illegal booze.

BlogChicagoNight

Famous Chicago Skyline

The first thing besides travel plans to Chicago that must be addressed is where you will be staying while here, and keeping on your budget. One suggestion for you, if you’re looking to experience Chicago’s “shady” past while staying in a piece of history would be the Congress Hotel. The rumors have it that Al Capone, the infamous gangster from days of Prohibition, lived and possibly owned this hotel.
They also say his ghost can be heard walking it’s halls at night, his wingtip shoes tapping on the tiles.

Money Savings Tip: Secure your best hotel rates in Chicago during Fall/Winter months at  Cheaphotels.com.

While keeping on the “shoestring” theme, why not start out your evening with special happy hour deals, where discounts and sometimes “free” is the word?

Many bar/restaurants offer special discounted prices on food and drinks between 4PM and 6PM, just perfect to fill up before heading out on the town. We hope you find this list of a few helpful during your visit.

The Florentine Between 4-6 PM, order a drink from the bar and you get a
151 W Adams St. free pizza!

Hub 51 Who doesn’t love sushi? Who doesn’t like the expense of
51 W Hubbard St eating sushi? Show up between 3-6 PM or 11PM until
closing time and all sushi is half price.

Bull & Bear This open and airy sports bar has an excellent appetizer
431 N Wells menu that’s half price from 3-7PM weekdays.

Bloghappyhour

Happy Hour can be a cheap & fun dining alternative

During the day Chicago streets are bustling with active busy bees, crowded beyond belief to many visitors. When the sun goes down it’s a whole different city, and you as a visitor can see the sights most people don’t.

The downtown Chicago lights against the night sky is a thing of beauty. Why not head to Millennium Park and enjoy taking a stroll around the Crown Fountain and Cloud Gate, known as “The Bean”, a massive golden sculpture. Experience the city in all its twinkling beauty, and don’t forget that camera.

For an evening of dancing, entertainment and possibly a light late night “snack” here’s a popular option. There’s no place for a pub-crawl quite like the Rush and Davidson Streets in the Gold Coast neighborhood. Head to the ever-popular Hangge-Uppe, a quirky 2 level bar with three dance floors, open till the wee hours. You can play shuffleboard at Mahoney’s Pub or Ping-Pong at Streeters. Depending on the hour and how hungry you are, right next door is a great hot dog joint to sample a traditional Chicago-style dog.

bloghotdog

There’s only one “Chicago-Style Hot Dog”!

Another excellent and totally fun experience for adults, singles or couples is the ever-popular “Adler After Dark”. This is an event held at the Adler Planetarium offering you unlimited access to shows and other unique entertainment. This experience, which is exclusively for adults 21 or over, changes every month making it unique and exciting. Enjoy multiple bars, music and one of the very best views of the Chicago skyline. As you plan your visit to Chicago, you might want to contact the Adler Planetarium to find out more, and if it’s happening during your stay. Keep in mind, advanced tickets will run you only $15 per person, and well worth it.

And then there’s Chicago Jazz! Long known for their Jazz clubs and after hour’s clubs, there’s no shortage that you might want to visit at night. Our thought is to recommend one of the best-known clubs, Andy’s Chicago Jazz as an experience that you can enjoy for hours and it won’t break the bank, if you don’t let it. Keep in mind that getting a table might take some time and patience, but it’s well worth it.
Andy’s offers you casual dining options along with music by Chicago’s top Jazz artists. Most nights the cover charge is only $10, and if you stick to appetizers or pizza with that beer, it’s a cheap evening.

Money Saving Transportation Tips:

1. Forget the rental vehicle.
Why complicate life and especially your vacation getting lost, trying to find a
parking space or paying for parking garage space, and spending all that money
on a rental anyway? And don’t forget extra heavy traffic in the city.

2. Get an “L” Train and or Metra Rail map and schedule, and use what
Chicago uses to get around the city. The “L” Train one-day pass is $10 and three-
Day passes are only $20.
If you are heading into the suburbs, take the Metra Rail for between $2.75-$9.00
one-way depending on how far you’re going. The nice thing is on weekends you
can score a weekend pass with un-limited travel for only $7.00.

3. Take a Taxi or Water Taxi to get from point A to point B. Sometimes this is the
best way to travel, especially to dinner. If you want to impress your date, taking
a Water Taxi to the Loop or China Town could be the right ticket. There are two
companies offering this service, Chicago Water Taxi and Shoreline Sightseeing,
both offering day passes.

Visit San Diego on a budget

Ultimate “Perfect Day” in San Diego without Breaking the Bank

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The view of downtown San Diego from Coronado Island

San Diego California is one of the most famous vacation spots in the U.S. if not the world. Famous for it’s almost perfect weather all year long, this destination has something for everyone, no matter what time of year, and how many pesos you have in your purse or wallet. But lets just say you want to enjoy the sunshine for free, and enjoy some of its famous sites within your budget. You will need to start your quest with a great place to stay in town that fits your budget, then you’re off on an exciting adventure.

That’s what we’re talking about! Let’s see how and where we can do just that.

Let’s start with the photo above, that to some says it all. Relax. Certainly you can find excitement and action in greater San Diego, but many vacationers really need and enjoy some “down time”. San Diego has plenty of sights and sounds that you can enjoy from a chair or on a towel. The example above is from the island of Coronado across the bay from San Diego, and a great place to enjoy a laid back day. You can drive over the Coronado Bridge to get there, or take the preferred method, a water taxi.

Once you get to Coronado, you can walk around downtown, grab a deli sandwich, and find a chair to enjoy the sights, like large and small vessels coming in and out. Both day and night, you should keep an eye out for the U.S. Navy Seal’s practicing in the waters. You can see them dropping off rubber boats into the water, or at night you will hear the boats, and suddenly there are little lights bobbing in the dark. They will be attached to the Seals.

Hot Tip: The best way to see the sights on Coronado is to rent bicycles.

sandiegomarina

The San Diego Boardwalk

There’s so much to see and enjoy in downtown San Diego, and you can really do it on foot. With a massive boardwalk stretching forever, you can enjoy the famous marina and dream of owning some of the multi million yachts docked there. You also have access to Seaport Village, a group of small specialty shops, restaurants overlooking the water, coffee shops and of course, kite shops.

Also on the waterfront docked and now a museum, where visitors can spend a whole day and still not see it all is the U.S.S. Midway. This is a real aircraft carrier and just a whole bunch of fun for everyone, especially families. You will learn and experience how 4,500 sailors lived aboard this massive vessel for months at a time. Explore all four flight decks, the galley, sleeping quarters, officers quarters and more.

USSMidwaySDbackground

No it’s not a city street! It’s actually the flight deck on the U.S.S. Midway.

Choosing to stay right in downtown San Diego is your best bet, especially keeping with the “Not Breaking the Bank” theme. Just the money you can save by using public transportation and not renting a vehicle will leave you smiling. However, San Diego can be a very expensive place to stay so choosing the right hotel for the best rate is key.

You can spend a whole day on the Midway, especially when you have small children in tow. Included in the price of admission are headsets and a self guided audio tour that takes you to over sixty different locations and explains what you are looking at and where you are. You will also hear recorded messages from times when the ship was on active duty, as well as recorded messages from sailors who sailed on the Midway. And they even have a special children’s audio tour specifically for those 7-12 years old where they get to climb into cockpits of jets and helicopters.

USSMidwayDeckFlagsCity

All in all this is a fascinating experience for all ages, and a peak at history.

Money Saving Tip:

Eat a big breakfast before arriving because you’ll need the energy. When it’s time for lunch, check out the “Fantail Diner”, where you can sit and view the city of San Diego while you enjoy a hotdog or sandwich. The prices a really great and aren’t what you would expect for a major attraction, and you are supporting the museum at the same time.

USSMidwayljetflagsmarsha

Examples of all planes and helicopters used are on display.

Downtown San Diego is chock full of things to do that won’t break the bank. In keeping with the general theme, you can take public transportation to Balboa Park where you can enjoy the fourteen museums there. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Museum of Photographic Art, San Diego Natural History Museum and more. If here on a weekend, there’s a free outdoor concert every Sunday at the Speckles Organ Pavilion.

At night the place to be in San Diego is the downtown Gaslamp Quarter where there are more restaurants and bars than you could ever imagine. You can stroll the shops and historic neighborhood as you check out the menus posted outside restaurants, usually with outdoor seating. You actually could be walking in the footsteps of a very famous person, Wyatt Earp, the famous lawman/outlaw who roamed these streets.

Like we said, restaurant choices are to the moon, but that’s not to say the prices have to be. Some of the favorite downtown in the Quarter are Anthony’s Fish Grotto averaging around $25 per person, to Phil’s Barbecue with excellent ribs, Colossal Onion Rings, and sandwiches, where prices are fair.

For adults, if you are looking for a fun place with great food, served on a white piece of paper off a roll, where you get insulted, it’s Dicks Last Resort. Seriously, Dicks is known for its surly, outrageous and quite energetic waiters and waitresses. But it’s fun, excellent ribs, burgers, barbequed chicken, and beer or cocktails. Like they say, “From High Class to No-Class, Dick’s is fun for all”.

You can travel up the coast for some of the best beaches and beach towns on the west coast. Pacific Beach, Mission Beaches and of course LaJolla and Torrey Pines. In Old Town San Diego or Mission Beach Boardwalk, which is 3 miles long, rent rollerblades or bikes for all day, just $20.

SanDiegoTrolley

Money Saving Tip:

You can purchase a day pass on the MTS for local San Diego travel for $5, and a all day pass for rural route up to Mission Beach and LaJolla, Carlsbad and North County for $10.

I’ll take the “Extra Virgin”! Every Time!

View from my balcony at the Surfsand Oceanfront Resort, Cannon Beach, Oregon

View from my balcony at the Surfsand Oceanfront Resort, Cannon Beach, Oregon

As we drove up the coast of Oregon towards Cannon Beach last weekend, I pondered the joys that could lay ahead. My wife Marsha was taking me to Cannon Beach for my birthday present, for four days. I had no idea where we were staying, where we would dine, it was all a surprise and planned by her.

As I almost always make out plans, with some input from her, I was excited by the un-expected pleasures that await, even if they sucked. After all, I was spending a quiet four days, on the Oregon Coast, with my best friend and love of my life.

My boy Oliver

My boy Oliver

As we pulled up to the Surf sand Oceanfront Resort, that super sized smile formed on  my face. Alas, this was one place we hadn’t stayed yet, but I had heard great things about.  For the next four days, we enjoyed our balcony, the ocean, and our companion, Oliver, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, nor 8 months old. You see, Cannon beach is completely dog friendly, from the beach, hotels, stairs and most restaurants.  Yep! one of the best dog towns I have ever visited.

But wait, the real story is where my surprise birthday dinner was. So, Saturday evening she tells me to dress nice, not formal, but nice for dinner. She drives into town, which took 40 seconds, and parks in front of a smaller building that had a sign that said something about being a kitchen store. Next I saw the name, EVOO and right away new that I was in for a great evening.

You see, I know that EVOO stands for Extra Virgin Olive Oil! Anything that is “Extra Virgin” is good for me! And hell..with oil?

As we entered the building I knew right away it wasn’t a massage pallor , but a cooking school. A beautiful kitchen, professional gas cooktop, and square table surrounding it. Immediately Chef Bob Neroni and wife Lenore greeted us, identified our seats, wished me happy birthday, and we looked about the kitchen store until the other guests arrived.

Chef Bob

Chef Bob

Then it was on to business. Bob and Lenore proceeded to explain the evening, and what they would be preparing for us as we watched and learned. There was of course, and added bonus..different wines would be paired with each course. Atta boy!

If you have never attended one of these cooking schools it’s something you should, especially as couples. You will always come away having learned a bunch about cooking, new techniques, and a menu you just want to prepare again yourselves.

This is the four courses that they prepared in from of us, and we got to eat.

Butternut squash & Gorgonzola Ravioli with seared green apple & cider gastric, served with Proseco Sparkling Wine.

Fried tomatoes with east-west crab cakes, apple butter (from scratch), carrot habanero aioli, confetti fried corn chips, served with a 2012 Grele dry rose.

Duck Baby!

Confit duck leg with homemade cranberry chutney, potato mash with duck butter sauce, roasted Brussels sprouts & garlic, with pomegranate seeds & pine nuts, served with a 2009 Nine Hats Sangiovese.

Apple date galette & ice creme, Chocolate crumb pumpkin tart, whipped creme, pepita-ginger brittle, served with Coffee Umbria Mezzanotte Coffee.

OK, so as Tony on the Soprano’s would say.. “get the fuck outta here”

Everything on this menu was made in front of us, even the brittle!

I have attended cooking classes, and demonstrations in the past, but this was a couple notches above the others for sure. I would recommend if you are ever on the Oregon Coast, or in the Portland Oregon area, make a trip to Cannon Beach, any season, and check this place out. A little pricy, but what the hell, worth every penny.

Cheers and may the holidays be good to you all,

Way to a woman’s heart is down “Oyster Road” ?? Ya Baby!!

Sometimes it’s the best thing you can do for yourself to just getaway somewhere special and forget about what you do for once in a while. After all, as a Freelance Writer / Photographer, I’m always working on my next blog post, magazine article or some other project. Notebook, iPad, iPhone and Nikon in hand I plunge ahead, even during holidays with the family or a weekend away with my wife.

Yummy..raw oysters

Yummy..raw oysters

So this past weekend I headed to the Oregon Coast, Newport to be exact, with my love interest, yes..my wife Marsha, and my best friend Kurt Brickner and his wife Sara. We had talked about attending the benefit affair, “Oyster Cloyster” held each year at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Well, this year we made it happen I’m thrilled to say.

http://www.oystercloyster.org

This annual benefit gives all the proceeds to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Oregon Coast Community College Fund, both great organizations. I have attended for the past three years and will continue to do so until I move to Belize in 1-2 years, but thats another story.

Why do I love this event so much you might ask? Oysters ! All you can eat oysters, prepared by some of the best Chefs in the Pacific Northwest IMO. You can have them raw, in a stew, stuffed with caviar , wassabi, or oh so many other inventive things. I will tell you, I am in heaven at this event. There’s just something about letting that flubber-like gooey, slippery, raw slime thing slide down your throat ! Especially along with some fresh horseradish cocktail sauce. Yummmmmmy !

Noblewine

And to complement all that fresh seafood, which does include some fresh shrimp, there are wineries and breweries there too. That’s affirmative. One of my very special and favorite wineries is always in attendance, Noble Estates Winery from Eugene, Oregon. My friend Steve was there again, smiling and just exploding with updates on their newest vintage, while pouring me a healthy sip or two. White or red, it doesn’t matter, there isn’t one of theirs I wouldn’t sip on, but I gotta say, the new release of “reserve” Pinot Noir? fantastically f*cking awesome ! Oooops..did I say that? 😉

Fried oysters anyone?

Fried oysters anyone?

I was very pleased to not only see the great turnout, but also how much my buddy Kurt and his lovely wife enjoyed the event, and oysters. I think Kurt would agree, the way to a woman’s “heart”, quite often is via the “Oyster Road” if ya know what I mean.

Ahhh yes yes yes..oysters

Ahhh yes yes yes..oysters

Something we did this year but I don’t remember from last, was going to different other buildings there at the Aquarium, like where you walk through the tunnel of water, with sharks, rays and the like swimming all around you.

All in all, quite an excellent night.

Now getting back to my point at the beginning. I told my wife before leaving on this weekend adventure, that I wasn’t going to work. I was on the receiving end of the look, you know, the one that says “your full of crap!?”. When I first entered the Aquarium, I ran into my friend Steve from Noble Winery, and the first thing he asked was “where’s the camera?” His next statement was, “Good for you, your hear to enjoy not work”. And he was right. My wife looked at me with an enormous smile, and we had a super evening, just enjoying each other.

So as is life in so very many circles, work is always hanging over us, even when we aren’t “working”. I say, leave the fucking cell phone, or camera, or notebook at home once in a while. Enjoy life and put a priority on those you love and not the “boss” who really doesn’t give a shit about your life.

That being said, what the hell am I going to do ? I didn’t take any photo’s? Guess I’ll figure out something.

Cheers you all,

Gary

Drunk Driving in a Golf Cart? Really? only on Ambergris Caye

Getting around the island of Ambergris Caye in Central America is so much different than  in the U.S. or almost anywhere else in the world. I can almost relate it to my early experiences in South East Asia, with it’s dirt roads, however there you had to worry about being run over by a motorbike or tripping a booby trap.

Coming in for a landing on Ambergris Caye..Oh Crap!

Coming in for a landing on Ambergris Caye..Oh Crap!

Flying into Ambergris Caye from the mainland is quite the experience to begin with, as you get a birds eye view of just where you are heading. Landing at the small almost “municipal” size airport, with one small terminal building, and an outside baggage claim area? well, it’s a trip. You can be lucky enough as I have been, to have arranged for pick up to bring me to the water taxi port, walk, or get a golf cart taxi. If you are staying in San Pedro which is the town, you may decide to rent a golf cart for a day, week or more. Just beware, drinking and driving still not a great idea, even in a golf cart.

Local Transportation

Local Transportation

As I chose to stay at a waterfront resort a few miles up the coast, the resort picked me up and arranged for my water taxi to the resort. This water taxi system became my main means of transportation for my 2 week visit on the island. If you are going to travel for more than a couple days via water taxi, I would suggest buying a week or two pass giving you unlimited rides back and forth to town and coastal restaurants.

Taking the water taxi to the resort

Taking the water taxi to the resort

If you choose to stay in town, the world is at you feet, really. You can walk almost everywhere, or get a golf cart taxi. If you want to discover more of the island, and even all of San Pedro, you might want to rent a golf cart by the day. Depending on what season you are on Ambergris Caye, visiting the north part of the island can be an adventure, especially during the rains. The road isn’t the best as you get 3-5 miles up north, even for bicycles. Guests at my resort told me how they had to get off their bicycles and walk through massive flooded areas of road, which by the way, are dirt. They even had locals pushing their golf cart through one, that laughed at them for even having bikes.

If you are on the island of Ambergris Caye for more than vacation, maybe looking at it for investment or possible relocation and retirement, I have one great suggestion for you. Contact one of the local relocation guide services, and spend a few hours with that person, being shown different areas, safest places to rent or buy a home. They will fill you in on all the facts they have learned over the years, including the mistakes they made themselves. If you choose wisely, you will spend time with someone who will become not only a friend, but someone that can assist you through the entire process.

I was lucky enough to find Ann Kuffner, with Escape Artist Relocation Services on Ambergris Caye. I spent about three hours with Ann, being shown different areas of town, best shops, where to get groceries, and where all the Expats live. We even met her later for a bottle or two of wine and some excellent cheese at a local wine merchants with her husband. All in all, I would say I found it very interesting and informative, and Ann filled in any and all gaps I had in my knowledge of Ambergris Caye.

Your table awaits you

Your table awaits you

I would highly suggest getting in touch with Ann  if you too are interested in relocating to Belize, and specifically Ambergris Caye where she has and her husband Mike have lived for over 13 years. http://www.belize.escapeartist.com

Cheers all,

Gary

No Shirt, No Shoes, No Asshole Politicians, No problem man” Belize

A visit to the world of “No shirt, no shoes, no problem”, Belize begs for some research on your part before arriving, and even more after your arrival. I had done tons of research on what to see, where to go, where to eat and where not to eat. Something I learned after a few days there was that I had way over packed for my 3 weeks there. I lived pretty much in bathing suits, light weight fast drying, polyester Hurley’s of course, and the same in no sleeve shirts. Sandals sometimes, but barefoot, except on the town cobblestones if the way to go.

A supply of the best waterproof sunscreen money can buy is essential. Something I found a must because of my wife’s research is a product from Skin So Soft, that is sunscreen combines with insect repellant. Bitting insects are everywhere, especially around food, so be prepared. Areas I overlooked like my muscular tanned legs were eaten for lunch while sitting at an oceanfront bar !

Getting suggestions from the locals, especially your bartender is a must for dining options on the island of Ambergris Caye. As far as dining options for Caye Calker, only one real choice in my humble opinion, and thats the Lazy Lizard Bar & Grill at the Split, and known as the “Sunny place for shard people”. My reason for living ;-))

Me and Crazy Canuck's Owner

Me and Crazy Canuck’s Owner

On Ambergris Caye I can turn you on to some favorites of mine for your dining pleasures, and drinking of course. One of my personal favorites is Crazy Canuck’s Bar where you can dine off their bar menu or have food delivered from the Melt Café next door which was awesome. The Canuck will definitely take care of you, and if he treats you wrong, tell him Gary the Travel Writer will be kicking his ass soon!

Elvis Kitchen is a landmark that you just don’t want to miss either being it’s the most famous restaurant on the island, and the burgers are pretty sweet. Another choice more for dinner is the Blue Water Grill for fresh seafood and dining on the beach in San Pedro. For a fun experience, the Palapa Bar, which by the way, sits over the water, is an experience in itself. Food is fine, drinks are beyond delightful, and you can float in a tube and have beers lowered to you!

For a heavy hitter of a restaurant, maybe for special occasions or if you want to dress up, the Victoria House is a place to dine, and the drinks aren’t bad either. Fancy smanchy, but well worth the bucks.

My favorites for evening dinner starts with Portofino Restaurant that you will need to take a boat to up the coast. In most cases they provide their boat to pick you up for dinner, which really impresses the ladies. My personal favorite meal there, which I had on my two dining occasions, Caribbean Angel Hair Pasta. Why you ask? Homemade pasta, creamy Chardonnay sauce, calamari, prawns and Parmesan cheese? That’s why!

Belize Bars have awesome scenery ;-))

Belize Bars have awesome scenery ;-))

Another favorite for me anyway is the Capricorn Restaurant also reached by water taxi. I will start by telling you they have an excellent wine list. I started with the Escargot, or as my wife calls them..buggers in garlic. I might add that the shrimp or conch Ceviche is awesome too. If in season I always say local spiny lobster, it’s so sweet! If not, any fresh seafood or their signature dish..Stuffed Grouper. Now in reviews, this dish wasn’t scored to great, but I found it tasty. However, if finding bones in your dish turns you off, you may look at another dish. Just sayin.

Temple Run Tavern owners

Temple Run Tavern owners

Lastly, there is another restaurant that I would suggest you try, and that’s the Temple Run Tavern at X’Tan Ha Resort, about a 15 minute water taxi ride up the coast. It’s not fancy, at least not at this time, but reconstruction is planned on the building housing the restaurant. What you need to experience is the new menu offered by the young chef and his wife the baker. And to give you a reason to try it, the resort itself has the best sandy beach on the island, hands down, so go for the day, enjoy the beach and snorkeling, let Chi or Hill fix you a rum cocktail or six, then hit the restaurant for dinner. You won’t be disappointed.

And another reason to visit or stay at the X’Tan Ha Resort, is their new guide service, “No Worries Tours. Whether your looking for a snorkel experience or jungle Mayan Temple visit, why not experience it with locals who have done this their whole life. Tell em Gary sent you, and maybe you will get a T-shirt too ?

Hope you enjoy and take head of my experience on the island. If you haven’t been to Belize, you owe it to yourself to go and experience heaven

No Worries my friends,

Gary

Belize..the Cure for todays day to day Bullshit !

Now doesn't this look like a "No Bullshit Zone"?

Now doesn’t this look like a “No Bullshit Zone”?

Many of us dream about a better life, less stress, more cost effective especially venturing into our retirement years, and without the day to day same old bullshit when we turn on the TV. As a matter of a fact, even though I’m addicted to TV, well actually only certain programs, like Deadliest Catch, Duck Commander and Sons of Anarchy, I dream of  my escape without that TV.

DSC_0748

We are seeing advertisements for life in Belize where the dollar is stable, oh what a novel idea, cost of living is lower than the U.S. and Canada, and the environment is healthy. But before you pack your bags and jump on a plane with a one way ticket, there are some things you need to know, at least I believe it so.

I arrived on the small “crop duster” plane from the International Airport in Belize City to the San Pedro Airport in the middle of the Hurricane Season, just when I wanted to be there. My idea was I needed to see the island at the worse time of the year, because I knew the best time of year would be delightful. Actually it wasn’t so bad in September when I arrived, with temp;s in the high 70’s and sunny.

Coming in for a landing on Ambergris Caye..Oh Crap!

Coming in for a landing on Ambergris Caye..Oh Crap!

Boarding the water taxi for my short journey up the coast to my home for the next two weeks, the X’ta Nah Waterfront Resort my excitement began to gain momentum. I had chosen the X’ta Nah because it had excellent ratings on Trip Advisor, and the resort had responded to my many pre-visit questions. It also was well known to have the best beach on the island, and hell, I was there to enjoy the water as well as investigate the island for relocation, right?

DSC_0808

My pre-visit research found that although it would be much easier to investigate San Pedro if I was staying in San Pedro, it could get busy there, and it was a quick commute via the water taxi’s from my resort. So, on with my discoveries.

The first thing I will tell you is that San Pedro is like a quaint little cobblestone road village that almost solely exists for the tourist trade. Its not a luxury resort town, far from it, with its main drag filled with shops and small restaurants, hole in the wall pharmacies and of course, the “souvenir shops” which BTW are all owned by the same person.

DSC_1109

Downtown San Pedro.."Really"

Downtown San Pedro..”Really”

The second thing I will tell you is unlike many other 3rd world countries I have visited, San Pedro and in fact all of Belize that I encountered, doesn’t smell of sewerage. It has a clean smell, many times co-mingled with aromas of something wonderful being cooked in a passageway or on the street. You will find no shortage of food on the island, either in town or in one of the many restaurants and bars on the waterfront.

I spent my first few days roaming the streets, visiting with all the shopkeepers, restaurants, grocery stores, markets and bars of course. Looking at San Pedro from the “living full time” view, I was mostly interested in what was available for food. Let me tell you that there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, and chicken, what all in Belize live on, oh ya..also beans :-). One thin lacking from diets in Belize is green salads, lettuce you know, not really a feature item here. I was mostly excited at the availability throughout the year of either the spiny lobster or conch.

pig

I will also tell you that you can find Cheerios, Corn Flakes, and Boston Baked Beens, but they will cost you. Living in Belize you will need to eat like the locals, or spend a small fortune, if and rarely, you can find U.S. products here. I did find a really sweet wine store in San Pedro, well stocked with U.S. wines, and quite excellent choices I might add as a wine consultant. However, be ready to spend some big bucks for wine here, and between the warm weather, and the Belize beer and rum, why bother.

All in all if you’re looking to live casual like, on the down low, you can do it very well here within most retirement budgets in my opinion. More on the cost of living, where to live, medical care and getting around, in the next blog post.

Till then I leave you and head to the kitchen to mix myself a nice Belize Rum and Coke, well..Diet Coke in fact.

Cheers,

Gary
